Know the Warning Signs

12 signs your furnace needs attention.

Catching problems early saves you money. If you're seeing any of these, give us a call.

Unusual Noises

Banging, rattling, or squealing often indicate worn components or loose parts.

Uneven Heating

Some rooms cold, others warm? Could be airflow or a failing heat exchanger.

Rising Energy Bills

A sudden spike in heating costs usually means the furnace is losing efficiency.

Short Cycling

Constantly turning on and off signals thermostat, airflow, or heat exchanger issues.

Poor Air Quality

Excess dust or worsening allergies can mean your furnace isn't filtering effectively.

Yellow Burner Flame

Should always be blue. Yellow or orange means incomplete combustion — a safety issue.

Furnace Age 15+ Years

Older units lose efficiency fast. A modern high-efficiency furnace can cut bills by up to 30%.

Frequent Repair Calls

If you're calling for repairs regularly, replacement is usually more cost-effective.

Unusual Odours

Burning, gas, or musty smells are all warning signs that need professional attention.

Cold Air from Vents

A blower or heat exchanger issue may be pushing unconditioned air through your home.

Pilot Light Problems

Difficulty igniting or a pilot that won't stay lit can indicate serious safety concerns.

Visible Rust or Corrosion

Surface deterioration on key components often means it's time for a full replacement.

Common Questions

Furnace FAQ.

How do I know what size furnace I need?
Proper sizing depends on your home's square footage, ceiling height, insulation quality, and window count. Our technicians perform a heat load calculation to determine the exact BTU capacity your home requires. An oversized unit short-cycles and wastes energy; an undersized one can't keep up on the coldest Ontario nights.
How often should I service my furnace?
Once a year, ideally in early fall before the heating season. A tune-up includes cleaning components, testing safety controls, inspecting the heat exchanger, and replacing the air filter. Regular maintenance can extend your furnace's lifespan by 5–10 years and prevent costly breakdowns.
What are the benefits of a high-efficiency furnace?
High-efficiency furnaces (90% AFUE or higher) use significantly less gas to produce the same heat, often reducing heating bills by up to 30%. They also run quieter, provide more even heat distribution, and may qualify for provincial rebates. The upfront cost is typically recouped within 3–5 years through energy savings.
Should I repair or replace my furnace?
A good rule of thumb is the "50% rule" — if the repair cost exceeds 50% of what a new unit would cost, replacement usually makes more financial sense. Also factor in the age of your unit (15+ years is typically replacement territory) and how frequently it's been needing repairs. We'll always give you an honest assessment.
My furnace stopped working — what should I check first?
Start with the basics: check your thermostat settings (make sure it's set to heat and the temperature is above room temp), confirm the circuit breaker hasn't tripped, and check that the air filter isn't clogged. If none of those resolve it, call GreenTemp — we offer emergency response across our service area.

Heat Pumps

Heat in winter, cool in summer — one smart system.

Heat pumps are the most energy-efficient way to heat and cool a Canadian home. GreenTemp installs air-source and cold-climate heat pumps across Ontario, including rebate-eligible models that can save you thousands.

What We Install

Heat pump solutions for every home.

Air-Source Heat Pumps

Extract heat from outdoor air even in cold temperatures. Modern units work efficiently down to –25°C, making them perfect for Ontario winters.

Ductless Mini-Split Systems

No existing ductwork? No problem. Ductless splits heat and cool individual rooms or zones with minimal installation disruption.

Hybrid Heat Pump Systems

Pairs a heat pump with your existing gas furnace. The pump handles mild weather efficiently; the furnace kicks in on the coldest days. Best of both worlds.

The Benefits

Why more Ontario homeowners are switching to heat pumps.

Up to 300% Efficiency

Heat pumps move heat rather than generate it, making them 2–3× more efficient than a gas furnace at comparable outdoor temperatures.

One System, Year-Round

Replaces both your furnace and air conditioner, reducing the number of systems to maintain.

Government Rebates Available

Qualifying systems may receive up to $5,000 in rebates through provincial and federal programs. We help you navigate the paperwork.

Reduced Carbon Footprint

Electric-powered and significantly lower in emissions than fossil fuel heating — especially as Ontario's grid gets cleaner.

Lower Long-Term Costs

Higher upfront cost is typically recovered within 4–7 years through energy savings, and units last 15–20 years.

Consistent Comfort

No blasts of hot air — heat pumps deliver a steady, even temperature that most homeowners find more comfortable.

Our Process

How a heat pump installation works.

01

Free Home Assessment

We evaluate your home's layout, insulation, existing ductwork, and heating/cooling patterns to recommend the right system type and capacity.

02

Rebate & Financing Guidance

We identify all provincial and federal rebates your project qualifies for and walk you through financing options so you know the full picture upfront.

03

Professional Installation

Our certified technicians handle everything — outdoor unit placement, refrigerant lines, indoor air handler, electrical connections, and system commissioning.

04

System Walkthrough & Warranty Registration

We show you how to operate your new system, register your warranties, and leave you with documentation. Follow-up support is always available.

Why GreenTemp

Why choose GreenTemp for your heat pump?

Cold-Climate Expertise

We only install heat pumps rated for Canadian winters — no equipment that'll leave you cold when the temperature drops.

Rebate Application Support

We handle the rebate paperwork on your behalf so you capture every dollar you're entitled to.

Flexible Financing from $69/mo

Monthly payment plans available — no payment, no interest options available on qualifying installations.

10-Year Parts & Labour Warranty

Full coverage on installation and equipment so you're protected long after we leave.

Certified Technicians

Every installer is licensed, insured, and trained on the specific equipment they're working with.

Local, Responsive Service

We're based in the communities we serve and take follow-up calls seriously — not a call centre in another province.

Common Questions

Heat pump FAQ.

Do heat pumps actually work in Ontario winters?
Yes — modern cold-climate heat pumps are rated to operate efficiently down to –25°C or lower, which covers the vast majority of Ontario winter days. For extreme cold snaps, a hybrid system (heat pump + gas backup) provides complete coverage without sacrificing efficiency during mild weather.
What rebates are available for heat pump installation in Ontario?
Rebates change regularly, but qualifying systems can receive support through the Canada Greener Homes Grant and provincial programs. Amounts can reach $5,000 or more depending on the equipment and your household situation. We'll review current programs during your quote and help you apply.
Do I need ductwork for a heat pump?
Not always. Ducted heat pumps use your home's existing ductwork. Ductless mini-split systems require no ducts at all — just a small refrigerant line through the wall connecting an outdoor unit to one or more indoor air handlers. Ductless is a great option for homes with baseboard heating, additions, or specific rooms that need climate control.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
Most residential heat pump installs are completed in one day. More complex projects (multi-zone ductless systems or hybrid setups) may take two days. We'll give you a clear timeline during the quote so you can plan accordingly.

Air Conditioners

A cool home all summer, guaranteed.

Whether you're replacing an aging central AC or adding cooling to a home that's never had it, GreenTemp's certified technicians install the right system efficiently and correctly — the first time.

What We Install

Cooling solutions for every type of home.

Central Air Conditioner Installation

New central AC units paired with your existing furnace and ductwork. We size properly for your home to ensure even cooling and maximum efficiency.

Ductless Air Conditioner (Mini-Split)

Individual room or zone cooling without ductwork. Perfect for additions, older homes, or spaces that don't connect to your central system.

AC Repair & Tune-Up Service

Not cooling properly? We diagnose and repair all major AC brands, and offer pre-season tune-ups to keep your unit running at peak efficiency.

Signs You Need AC Service

Is your air conditioner trying to tell you something?

Warm Air from Vents

If your AC is running but not cooling, low refrigerant, a dirty coil, or compressor failure may be to blame.

Poor Airflow

Weak airflow throughout the home usually points to a failing compressor or blocked ductwork.

Frequent Cycling

Constantly switching on and off? Often a sign of an oversized unit or a refrigerant issue.

High Humidity Indoors

A well-functioning AC removes moisture. If your home feels sticky, the system may need attention.

Water Leaks

Moisture or pooling water around your indoor unit can indicate a clogged condensate drain or refrigerant leak.

Unusual Sounds

Grinding, squealing, or banging often indicate mechanical issues that worsen if left unaddressed.

Rising Hydro Bills

A sudden increase in your electricity bill during summer often means your AC is working harder than it should.

Unit is 10–12+ Years Old

Older units lose efficiency significantly each year. A modern AC can reduce cooling costs by 20–40%.

Bad Odours

Musty smells can indicate mould in ductwork or on the evaporator coil — a health concern worth addressing promptly.

Our Process

How we handle an AC installation.

01

Free In-Home Consultation

We assess your home's cooling load, check existing ductwork, and evaluate your electrical panel capacity to design the right system.

02

Equipment Selection & Transparent Quote

We present equipment options with full pricing — including installation — so there are no surprises. We explain the efficiency ratings and expected energy savings for each.

03

Professional Same-Week Installation

Our licensed team installs your new system, handles all refrigerant work, connects to your existing system, and tests full operation before leaving.

04

Post-Install Support

We register your warranty, answer any questions about operation, and offer annual maintenance plans to keep your AC at its best.

Why GreenTemp

Why choose GreenTemp for your air conditioner?

Proper Load Calculation

We never guess on sizing. An AC that's too big or too small wastes energy and wears out faster — we size it right.

All Major Brands Serviced

We install and service all leading HVAC brands — not just one — so you get the best equipment for your specific needs.

Refrigerant-Certified Technicians

Handling refrigerant requires certification. Every GreenTemp tech working on cooling equipment is properly certified and insured.

Financing from $38.99/mo

New AC installation with flexible monthly payments. No interest options available for qualified customers.

Same-Week Availability

Ontario summers move fast — we get you booked quickly so you're not suffering through a heatwave waiting for an appointment.

10-Year Warranty

Full parts and labour warranty on all new installations. We stand behind our work from day one.

Common Questions

Air conditioner FAQ.

What size AC do I need for my home?
AC sizing is measured in tons (or BTUs) and depends on your home's square footage, insulation, ceiling height, sun exposure, and the number of windows. We perform a proper cooling load calculation rather than estimating — an oversized unit short-cycles and leaves your home humid; an undersized one runs constantly without catching up. We get the sizing right the first time.
How long does a central AC installation take?
A standard central AC replacement takes 4–8 hours in a single day. New installs where we're also adding or modifying ductwork may take longer. We'll give you an accurate time estimate during the quote so you can plan your day.
Should I repair or replace my AC?
If your unit is under 8 years old and the repair is minor, repair usually makes sense. For units over 10–12 years old with significant repair costs, replacement often delivers better value — especially when you factor in modern efficiency gains and a new warranty. We'll give you an honest assessment and never recommend replacement just to sell a new unit.
How often should I service my air conditioner?
Once a year, ideally in spring before the cooling season begins. An annual tune-up includes cleaning the coils, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical connections, testing the thermostat, and lubricating moving parts. This extends the life of your unit and prevents the most common mid-summer breakdowns.

Warning Signs

Signs your water heater needs replacing.

No Hot Water

Complete failure to heat water is the most obvious sign — call us for a same-day assessment.

Rusty or Discoloured Water

Brown or orange water from your hot tap often means the tank is corroding from the inside.

Rumbling or Popping Sounds

Sediment buildup on the tank floor causes these sounds and reduces efficiency significantly.

Water Around the Base

Any pooling water near your tank should be investigated immediately — often indicates a leak or crack.

Inconsistent Water Temperature

Water running hot then cold is a sign of a failing heating element or thermostat.

Unit 10+ Years Old

Most tanks are designed for 10–15 years. Replacing proactively avoids an emergency situation.

Why GreenTemp

Why homeowners trust GreenTemp for water heater work.

Same-Day Installs Available

Hot water is a necessity. We prioritize water heater calls and can often complete a replacement the same day you contact us.

Free Installation Included

On all water heater installations — no hidden labour charges added after the quote.

Financing from $21.99/mo

Flexible payment plans available for both tank and tankless options — no large upfront cost required.

Gas & Electric Expertise

Our techs are licensed for both gas line connections and electrical work — we handle the full scope of the job.

Honest Recommendations

We'll tell you whether a repair or replacement makes more financial sense — and we won't push you toward a more expensive unit than you need.

Common Questions

Water heater FAQ.

How do I know what size water heater I need?
For tank water heaters, a 40-gallon unit suits 1–2 people, 50 gallons for 3–4, and 60+ gallons for larger households. For tankless units, we calculate the required flow rate (gallons per minute) based on how many hot water fixtures you might use simultaneously. We size everything correctly during the in-home assessment.
Is a tankless water heater worth the extra cost?
For most households, yes. Tankless units use 25–40% less energy than storage tanks, last 20+ years versus 10–15 for tank units, and never run out of hot water. The higher upfront cost is typically recovered within 5–8 years, and the longer lifespan means fewer replacement cycles over the life of the home.
How long does water heater installation take?
A standard tank water heater replacement typically takes 2–4 hours. Tankless installations take 4–8 hours as they may require additional gas line or electrical work. In most cases, we complete the full job in a single visit and have you back on hot water the same day.
Can I switch from a tank to a tankless water heater?
Yes, and it's one of the most common upgrades we do. The switch may require upgrading your gas line or electrical panel depending on the unit selected. We assess this during the quote so there are no surprises. Most conversions are straightforward and completed in one day.

Common Questions

Smart thermostat FAQ.

Will a smart thermostat work with my existing HVAC system?
Most modern smart thermostats are compatible with gas furnaces, heat pumps, central air conditioners, and many boiler systems. Compatibility depends on the wiring configuration at your thermostat. During our installation visit, we check your existing wiring and confirm everything is compatible before we proceed — if it's not, we'll tell you clearly.
Do I need a C-wire for a smart thermostat?
Many smart thermostats require a C-wire (common wire) for continuous power. If your current setup doesn't have one, some models work without it using a power adapter or battery, or we can add a C-wire as part of the installation. We'll assess what's needed during the quote and include any additional wiring in the price upfront.
Can I install a smart thermostat myself?
Technically yes, but it's easy to make wiring mistakes that prevent your HVAC system from operating correctly — or damage the thermostat or your equipment. Professional installation ensures it's wired correctly the first time, your system is tested across all modes, and everything is set up properly. The cost of professional installation is modest and worth the peace of mind.
Which smart thermostat should I choose?
It depends on your priorities. For automation and learning capability, the Nest Learning Thermostat is excellent. For multi-room temperature sensing, the Ecobee with room sensors is a standout. For simplicity and value, the Nest E or Sensi Touch are great options. We'll make a specific recommendation during the quote based on your HVAC setup and what matters most to you.
